COVER STORY
HALL OF FAMER
JIM CALHOUN IS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS BASKETBALL CREDENTIALS. BUT HIS PLAYERS TELL A STORY OF A CARING MAN WHO TREATS THEM LIKE FAMILY AND WHO CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR INFLUENCE IN THEIR LIVES.

By Owen Canfield

On a day in late 1988, I called Jim Calhoun to ask a UConn basketball question. “How are you?” he asked by way of greeting. I said, “Fine,” and hurried to pose the question I had called about. "No, no, wait a minute,” he said, and then, emphasizing the word “you” he asked again, “How are you?”

Though we did not yet know each other well, I realized it was not just a how-are-ya hello. A few weeks earlier my wife had died of cancer. The coach was asking how I was coping with the pain and emptiness that follows such a loss. First things first. Basketball business could wait a minute. I never forgot that exchange.
