What: “Images of Walt Whitman: The Commercialization of an American Original”

Why go: It’s a unique exhibition displaying everything from buttons and caricatures to postcards and paintings that depict the image, poetry and musings of writer Walt Whitman and explores how his image and words were used in pop culture and commercial advertising.

What: “Old Masters/New Directions: A Decade of Collecting”

Why go: Ever wonder how museums choose which pieces of artwork to acquire? This exhibit will give you a rare glimpse into the collecting practices of the Wadsworth by showcasing a wide variety of works that have been collected over the last decade. They illustrate the variety, thought and time that go into selecting the pieces.

What: Invitation to Ride
Where: The New England Carousel Museum, Bristol

Why go: It’s a brand new exhibit being featured at the Carousel Museum. The museum will be adorned with Equestrian-themed art from artist Leslie Hudson-Tolles, in oils, pastels, and prints in honor of the historic carousel horses of New England.

What: The Learned Ladies of Park Avenue
Where: The Hartford Stage,

Why go: True love and greed battle it out in this comedic play by David Grimm set in 1920s New York. Directed by Michael Wilson, the comedy is a freely adapted version of Moliere’s Les femmes savantes.

What: Savage Ancient Seas
Where: Science Center, 950 Trout Brook Drive, West Hartford
When: Now through Jan. 2, 2006
What it costs: Adults and children ages 2 and over, $7.
Why go: Learn about and experience the pre-historic sea alive with all its inhabitants. The exhibit looks in depth at what life was like under the sea during the dinosaur age.

What: Cirque du Soleil presents Varekai
Where: Grand Chapiteau, Market St., Hartford
When: Now through Oct. 9

Why go: Experience the mystery that is housed in Le Grand Chapiteau erected on Market Street in Hartford. Cirque du Soleil is bringing their touring show Varekai to Hartford in a performance sure to astound with its blend of daring acrobatics, artistry, elaborate costuming and intricate set design.

What: Scarecrows Along Main Street
Where: Main St., Old Wethersfield

Why go: Main Street will be guarded by one-of-a-kind scarecrows designed and constructed by members of the community. Each scarecrow has a unique personality and theme creating a festive harvest community.

What: Cleve Gray Retrospective
Where: New Britain Museum of American Art, 56 Lexington St., New Britain
When: Now through Nov. 25

Why go: The much-lauded abstract expressionism of Connecticut resident Cleve Gray will be on display. His often large-scale abstract paintings evoke a sense of energy and intellectual insight.

What: Il Trovatore
Where: The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, 166 Capitol Ave., Hartford

Why go: The Connecticut Opera’s 2005 season opens with this gripping story by Giuseppe Verdi of revenge and love. The opera is the second in Verdi’s series, “trilogia popolare” following his work, Rigoletto and preceding La Traviata.

What: “Pipes in the Valley” Celtic Music Festival

Why go: Live bands, food, beer (of course) and crafts make this free festival the place to be for fans of Celtic music. Featuring Clann Au Drumma, The Glengarry Bhoys, Enter the Haggis and more.

What: Riverdance

What: Ravi Shankar’s Festival of India II

Why go: The Indian sitarist, best known for his connection to George Harrison and the Beatles, brings his celebration of classical Indian music to UConn. The show also features his daughter, Anoushka Shankar and a collection of musicians and dancers.

Why go: UConn hopes to duplicate last year’s impressive season despite losing starting quarterback Dan Orlovsky to the NFL. See the Huskies in fierce match-ups against their Big East foes.

What: Judy Collins and The Smothers Brothers

What: Hartford International Jazz Festival
Where: Various locations throughout downtown Hartford

What it costs: $20 to $35
Why go: Spend Columbus Day weekend listening to some of the best jazz musicians around as they perform throughout the capitol. Both the performers and venues are diverse so make sure to visit the festival’s website to plan your weekend.

What: Dalí, Picasso, and the Surrealist Vision
Where: Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, 600 Main St., Hartford

Why go: One of the world’s best collections of surrealist and modern art returns to its
home in Hartford after touring the world for almost two years.

What: The Greater Hartford Marathon
Where: Bushnell Park, Hartford
When: Oct. 8, 8 a.m.
What it costs: Free to watch, registration fees vary.
Why go: Starting and ending in Bushnell Park, the marathon has a few prime locations for spectators to watch the runners and enjoy. If you’re in the race, don’t run too fast or you’ll miss the fall foliage and the pristine surroundings.

What: Hartford Symphony Orchestra Performances

When: “The Music of John Williams,” Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.; “John Williams: Out of this World,” Oct. 8 at 8 p.m.; “Leonid Sigal plays Mozart,” Oct. 25 & 26, 7:30 p.m.; “The Swingin’ Big Band Sound of Duke Ellington,” Oct. 29, 8 p.m.

What: Connecticut Archaeology Expo

Why go: Some great minds in the field of archaeology get together to display their work to people of all ages. The expo will be a great hands-on learning experience for anyone interested in the field.

What: Floyd and Clea Under the Western Sky
Where: Hartford Stage, 50 Church St., Hartford
When: Oct. 13 through Nov. 13

Why go: A musical about an impoverished country singer and a young woman who dreams of fame finds a home in Hartford as the city’s premier theater company brings the show to life.

What: Hartford Wolf Pack Home Opener vs. Manchester
Where: Hartford Civic Center, One Civic Center Plaza, Hartford
When: Oct. 8, 7 to 10 p.m.
What it costs: Adults, $18 to $30; youth (ages 2-16), $9 to $15
Why go: Just because the NHL’s back doesn’t mean you should forget about the Wolf Pack. Hartford’s pro hockey team looks to rebound after a disappointing early exit from last year’s playoffs when they face the Manchester Monarchs in a game that pits last year’s two top Atlantic Division teams against each other.

What: Cyrano

Why go: If you’ve only seen Steve Martin in Roxanne, now’s your chance to see the source material. An eloquent man with a big nose and a handsome dimwit join forces to woo the woman they both love in this classic play put on by the Children’s Theatre.

What: The Rat Pack: Live from Las Vegas
Where: The Bushnell, 166 Capitol Ave., Hartford
When: Oct. 18-23

Why go: It may not be the Rat Pack and it may not be in Las Vegas, but this show will bring you as close to the glory days of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. as you’ll get. A talented cast will perform the group’s classic songs at the Bushnell.

What: Hartford Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven’s Pastorale

Why go: The Hartford Symphony Orchestra is busy this month. They’ll be performing Beethoven’s sixth symphony at the University of Hartford.

What: Sesame Street Live
Where: Hartford Civic Center, One Civic Center Plaza, Hartford
When: Oct. 20-23

Why go: The classic kid’s show featuring classic characters that millions of kids and their parents have fallen in love with since its debut in 1969 brings its live act to the Civic Center.

What: Sound of New England
Where: The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, 166 Capitol Ave., Hartford
When: Oct. 22
What it costs: $28.50 to $33.50
Why go: The renowned chorus will sing barbershop music that, at 85 voices strong, is fit for a really big barber shop. The show features choreographed dancing as well.

What: Storybook Gala
Where: Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, 600 Main St., Hartford
When: Oct. 22, 7 p.m.

Why go: Mark Kimball, Riverton author of books like Everyday Angels, A Snowman Named Just Bob, A Cricket’s Tale and more will be on hand to sign books. All of this benefits the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

What: Graveyard Talk, Tour and Treats
Where: Nathan Hale Homestead, 2299 South St., Coventry
When: Oct. 23, 3 to 5 p.m.

Why go: The house of Connecticut’s Revolutionary War hero is the site of a Halloween celebration. It’s not all history; it wouldn’t be Halloween without some treats after all.

What: Halloween Weekend
Where: Elizabeth Park Pond House, Prospect & Asylum Ave., Hartford
When: Oct. 29 & 30, 12 to 4 p.m.
What it costs: Free
Why go: Hayrides, a haunted house and a parade on the 29th make Elizabeth Park a great place to spend Halloween weekend. While you’re there, take in the beautiful gardens at the Park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

What: Halloween at the Carousel Museum
